Course Description
This year, the computer science class is focusing on the area of music technology as it relates to film soundtracks. Students are taking an analytical approach in order to develop an understanding of the essential components of a film soundtrack. Computer technology plays a significant role in the creation of music and sound effects for films. Many of today’s successful film composers and sound artists are coming from the technology field, as opposed to the classically trained composers from the early years of film music. Each of the computer science students has a strong background in both technology and music.
The first week of the course is focused on developing diverse compositional techniques and examining how they are applied in short and long films. The students spend the second week producing the soundtrack for a full-length silent motion picture. They are faced with the challenge of composing a musical score, creating sound effects and adding dialog where appropriate. If time allows, the students will also create a film trailer and marketing materials such as movie posters.
